How good is is good enough? Many well meaning people have the notion that they are good enough to make it to heaven on their own. Even God fearing individuals who say the believe in Jesus Christ and that He died for their sins…
What people fail to understand is that Jesus Christ PAID for their sins. He just didn’t die on the cross for some sins, or just to demonstrate His love, but without any kind of redemption.
After all, nothing proofs love better then SUICIDE (Sarcasim)! Think about it. If Christ died but did not save us, then why did He give himself so willing to be crucified? If a man dies pushing his son away from an incoming car, that’s not suicide, that’s heroism and sacrifice.
When writing to the Galations, Paul put it this way…
“I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.” (Galatians 2:21)
Ephesians 2:8-9 also says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
A rich young ruler called God “good” and in his heart thought of himself as good, but Jesus quickly burst his bubble…
” ‘Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?’ And He said to him, ‘Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ ” (Matthew 19:16-17)
We then need to honestly evalutate how good we really are. People tend to compare themselves to a “neighbor” who they believe is less worthy of the kingdom of heaven (without necesarily realizing that’s what they are doing). We forget that we are to compare ourselves to PERFECTION, God’s pefection, NOT our imperfect neighbors. I wonder what a fellow neighbor might think about you. Aren’t they also comparing themselves to you? Mmh.
The truth is that we have all broken at least one of the 10 commandments (See them below).
Here is some of the key faulty logic behind those who believe they are good enough to enter heaven…
1) They believe they are good enough to make it to heaven (as we have already explained). “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
2) They forget that though God is a loving God, He is also a just God. He loves us, but our sins must be punished. – “For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23)
3) It’s a human tendency to want to be in control of once’s destiny. We want to play a key part in our own salvation. This stems from pride.
4) A lack of understanding of what the Bible says. Many people seem to know the “Christian Lingo” but have not fully understood what it all means. “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13)
5) They do not understand or do not realize that salvation is a “gift” from God. The second half of Romans 6:23 says, “…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Also, John 3:16 does NOT say, “For God so loved the world that He gave his only son, so that whoever goes to church as often as possible, helps old ladies cross the street, donates regularly to various charities, and is generally decent to his neighbor will have eternal life.” NO it actually says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever BELIEVES in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (Caps. emphasis added).
6) They believe that they can loss their salvation. If our salvation can be lost, then logic says it must be “maintained,” which is our own effort. John 10:28-29 says, “and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” No one can snatch us away from Jesus Christ.
My friend, if you are reading this, and till now have not understood what Jesus Christ trully did on the cross for you, we challenge you to consider what the Bible says. If what we have been explaining make sense to you, we urge you to receive Christ as your Saviour right now” Life is very fragile. Their are only two things for certain, death and taxes. We do not know what is in store for us tomorrow. Don’t hesitate to accept the love of Jesus Christ.
